Bangka island lies in the Eastern part of South Sumatra mainland, surrounded by South China Sea and Jawa Sea. The island covers an area of 11,615 square kilometers stretching 180 kilometers from Northwest to Southeast. Its topography consists of hilly lowland covered with tropical plants and swamps and surrounded by white sandy beautiful beaches of clear water.
The Island has a population of approximately 660,000 people, consist of different ethnic groups which come from all part of Indonesia, there are a large number of Chinese inhabitants especially in the north around Belinyu,accounting for 30% of the Bangka population.
The name "Bangka" comes from the word "Wangka" which means tin. Bangka, also known as the island of pepper, is the biggest tin producer in Indonesia.
